It has also been challenged in several school districts, and the story itself centers around intellectual freedom and access to art and literature within prisons.

Colography: The Nitty-Gritty Colorado
Properly defined, “geography” means “the documentation of Earth.” Extending this concept gives us “Colography,” the “documentation of Colorado.” Our state sprawls across three great geologic regions blending characters from each. So how many mountain ranges do we have? How many parks do we have, and what is a “park,” anyway? Where are these landscape features and how did they get there? How many cactuses and orchids, owls and hummingbirds — how much life — garnish the landscapes with distinctive lifescapes? “Colography: The Nitty-Gritty Colorado” examines physical and biotic details of the state we call home, all done with a mind for experiencing it.
May: Landscapes and Waterscapes
Though defined as a single place, Colorado sprawls across three landforms and textures them with hills and mountains, canyons and valleys. Water standing as lakes and reservoirs or flowing as creeks and rivers accents the land. Landscapes and waterscapes make Colorado more than just one place.

Book Description: For cynical twenty-three-year-old August, moving to New York City is supposed to prove her right: that things like magic and cinematic love stories don’t exist, and the only smart way to go through life is alone. She can’t imagine how waiting tables at a 24-hour pancake diner and moving in with too many weird roommates could possibly change that. And there’s certainly no chance of her subway commute being anything more than a daily trudge through boredom and electrical failures.
But then, there’s this gorgeous girl on the train.

June: Lifescapes and Anthroscapes
Life inside Colorado differs from place to place. Precipitation and temperature determine which plants live where, and plant communities determine which animals live where. Human activity imposes changes to which only some wildlife can adapt, making Colorado a checkerboard of lifescapes and anthroscapes.

Kevin Cook: Wildlife Window Nature Series
July: The Collectors
Various people came to Colorado to collect plants and birds, insects and mammals, a quest that took them everywhere deep into this new state. Documenting their travels and their collections did more to define the character of Colorado than any other undertaking of the day.

We’ll also learn about the native seed farm at Kestrel Fields, and how native seeds benefit the community.

Rainbow Book Connections: Speed Dating & Friending
Speed Dating for LGBTQIA+ Folks and Allies
Are you a queer book lover looking to build meaningful connections in a fun, relaxed, and affirming space? Join us for an evening where stories, conversations, and new connections come together.
How it works:
- Bring Your Favorite LGBTQIA+ Book: Choose a queer book you absolutely love—whether it’s a foundational classic, a contemporary bestseller, or a hidden gem that means the world to you. You’ll get to share why this book resonates with you and hear what lights others up, too.
- Speed Dating with a Twist: In our speed dating-style setup, you’ll engage in brief, rotating conversations with fellow participants. During each round, you’ll have several minutes to explain what makes your chosen book special and connect with others over shared reading interests.
- Continue the Conversation: After the speed dating rounds, we’ll unwind with mocktails and treats. This is your chance to further chat with the people you’ve met, discuss books in more depth, or simply enjoy some great conversation in a laid-back atmosphere.
- Stay Connected: If you meet someone you’d like to stay in touch with after the event, simply write down their name during the speed dating rounds. If you both note each other’s names, we’ll email you with each other’s contact information to help you keep the connection going.
This event is all about celebrating queer joy, shared stories, and building community—whether you’re looking for romance, friendship, or just great conversation. No pressure, no judgment—just good vibes and great company.
Readers of all identities, orientations, and backgrounds are welcome. Whether you’re into queer memoirs, sapphic sci-fi, gay graphic novels, or anything in between, there’s a seat at the table for you.

August: The Collected
Many wildlife species in Colorado bear names of people who first recognized them as previously unknown. Engelmann Spruce and Parry Primrose honor the achievements of two giants in botany; others like them contributed much as well. Their collections allow us to compare then with now.

Sharing is caring! Bring your garden’s overflow of vegetables, fruits, and flowers to share with others. Anyone can come and pick up free food or share your fruits, vegetables, and flowers. We’re partnering with the Larimer County Master Gardeners and the Grow & Give project. Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer your gardening questions and guide you to helpful resources from CSU Extension! Master Gardeners are always available via email at larimermg@gmail.com.
What can I bring? You can bring any homegrown produce, flowers, or seeds that are in good condition.
What should I not bring? Please do not bring any meat/dairy/eggs or any produce that is not in good condition (overripe, damaged, etc). Rule of thumb, if it is something you would not want to eat or share with a friend, please do not bring it.
Can I come if I don’t have anything to share? YES! Please come and take home foods that you will eat.
What happens to the food that is not taken? We will donate any leftover food to the Front Range Community College WOLF Pantry. The WOLF Pantry gives free food to students.

This month for the Reading Rainbow: LGBTQ+ Book Club we’ll be reading and discussing The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White.
Join us in-person at Old Town Library. These discussions are free and open to the public, but you must register to receive an invitation and information on getting a copy of the book.
Book Information: London, 1883. The Veil between the living and dead has thinned. Violet-eyed mediums commune with spirits under the watchful eye of the Royal Speaker Society, and sixteen-year-old Silas Bell would rather rip out his violet eyes than become an obedient Speaker wife. According to Mother, he’ll be married by the end of the year. It doesn’t matter that he’s needed a decade of tutors to hide his autism; that he practices surgery on slaughtered pigs; that he is a boy, not the girl the world insists on seeing.
After a failed attempt to escape an arranged marriage, Silas is diagnosed with Veil sickness—a mysterious disease sending violet-eyed women into madness—and shipped away to Braxton’s Sanitorium and Finishing School. The facility is cold, the instructors merciless, and the students either bloom into eligible wives or disappear. So when the ghosts of missing students start begging Silas for help, he decides to reach into Braxton’s innards and expose its rotten guts to the world—as long as the school doesn’t break him first.

October 14: State, County, and Municipal Lands and Their Scapes
The concept of city parks became embedded in American culture, but through time parks came to mean something more than flowerbeds, picnic tables, and tennis courts. Concepts of “open spaces” and “natural areas” became popular, and those places now beneficially serve many people many ways.

November 11: Remembering the Past to Anticipate the Future
During the first century and a half of America’s existence as a country, people obliterated entire ecosystems. That loss affected everything from aesthetics to economics: a forest entirely cut to the ground cannot provide commercially valuable lumber. Such realities motivated concepts of conservation and preservation.

Join us in-person at Old Town Library. These discussions are free and open to the public, but you must register to receive an invitation and information on getting a copy of the book.
Book Information: Woman or man? This internationally acclaimed novel looks at the world through the eyes of Jess Goldberg, a masculine girl growing up in the “Ozzie and Harriet” McCarthy era and coming out as a young butch lesbian in the pre-Stonewall gay drag bars of a blue-collar town.
Stone Butch Blues traces a propulsive journey, powerfully evoking history and politics while portraying an extraordinary protagonist full of longing, vulnerability, and working-class grit. This once-underground classic takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride of gender transformation and exploration and ultimately speaks to the heart of anyone who has ever suffered or gloried in being different.

Kevin Cook: Wildlife Window Nature Series
December: This Place Colorado
An abstractly defined geographic place, Colorado offers a surprising diversity of landscapes, lifescapes, and waterscapes. Each scape sustains its own interwoven communities of plants and animals so each community bears identity of its own. Together, they define the character of the place we call home.

Book Information: Lorel has always dreamed of becoming a witch: learning magic, fighting monsters, and exploring the world beyond the small town where she and her mother run the stables. Even though a strange plague is killing the trees in the Kingdom of Cekon and witches are being blamed for it, Lorel wants nothing more than to join them. There’s only one problem: all witches are women, and she was born a boy.
When the coven comes to claim her best friend, Lorel disguises herself in a dress and joins in her friend’s place, leaving home and her old self behind. She soon discovers the dark powers threatening the kingdom: a magical blight scars the land, and the power-mad Duchess Helte is crushing everything between her and the crown. In spite of these dangers, Lorel makes friends and begins learning magic from the powerful witches in her coven. However, she fears that her new friends and mentors will find out her secret and kick her out of the coven, or worse.
